Update 4

Sensex hovers at record high
The market was firm but range bound in mid-afternoon trade. Cement, IT and banking shares were in demand. Reliance Industries (RIL) remained subdued.

At 14:41 IST, Sensex was up 79 points at 13,782. It was hovering close to a record high of just under 13,800 which it had struck in early afternoon trade.

The market opened on a firm note and it had firmed up further in early afternoon trade. Sensex had risen as much as 95.69 points to a high of 13,799.02 at 12:24 IST.The market breadth was strong. 1502 shares rose on BSE as compared to 1004 shares that declined. 74 shares were unchanged. Gainers outpaced losers by a ratio of 1.49:1.BSE clocked a turnover of Rs 3480 crore.

Private sector bank UTI Bank rose 0.40% to Rs 498.85, after three block deals were struck on the counter on BSE

Three block deals of 23.11 lakh shares each were struck on the counter on BSE in opening trades at an average price of Rs 501.30 per share. These deals s roughly amounted to 2.47% of the bank’s equity.The counter saw cumulative volumes of 69.75 lakh shares on BSE.

The stock has been on a steady up-trend in the past month, on sustained buying. From Rs 418.20 on 27 October, the stock rallied to Rs 505.35 by 22 November, as buying continued. Here it witnessed profit booking and settled at Rs 496.85 by 24 November 2006.

Essar Oil gains after refinery goes on stream
Essar Oil rose 2.32% to Rs 52.85 after it announced commencement of operations at its petroleum refinery at Vadinar in Gujarat.

The plant will start its trial production with a capacity of 7.5 million tonne per annum of crude which will gradually go up to 10.5 million tonne per annum. This current phase of commissioning comes four months ahead of the originally scheduled date of commissioning, i.e. 31 March 2007, the company said in a statement. The company expects to attain production at full capacity in the next two quarters, it said.The counter saw volumes of 4.93 lakh shares on BSE. The company’s shares have been included in the BSE 100 index from today.

Hindustan Zinc spurts following price hike
Top zinc major Hindustan Zinc surged 6.44% to Rs 977.55, after it raised zinc prices by 3.5% to Rs 2,28,800 per tonne.

The stock had surged to an intra-day high of Rs 983, while its low is at Rs 926.13.85 lakh shares were traded on the counter on BSE
