Sensex in the red

The market was rangebound in morning trade. Dr Reddy’s Lab edged higher ahead of results while Infosys firmed up. However, Satyam Computer remained weak.

At 11:23 IST the Sensex was down 7 points, at 14,175. It has been fluctuating in a narrow band, between 14,152.71 and 14,200, since 10:30 IST. The market opened firm but lost steam shortly.

The market-breadth was strong. For 1,453 shares rising on BSE, compared to 943 that declined. Just 51 shares were unchanged. Gainers outpaced losers by a ratio of 1.5:1.
The BSE clocked a turnover of Rs 1158 crore.

Adlabs Films gains on TV production house takeover
Adlabs Films advanced 2.65% to Rs 457, after acquiring controlling stake in Synergy Communications.As many as 50,773 shares were traded in the counter on BSE.

The stock steadily rallied in the past few months on the back of sustained buying interest. From Rs 352.30 on 17 October, it advanced to Rs 459.95 by 12 January 2007. Here, it slipped to Rs 445.20 by 19 January 2007, on profit-booking.

Adlabs Films completed acquiring controlling stake in Synergy Communications, the premier television content company. The new entity will be called Synergy Adlabs.

Synergy Adlabs will contribute sizeable revenue to the overall revenue pie of Adlabs Films by March 2008. The intention is to enhance Synergy's production operations and scale up content, to include high-quality popular fiction, youth-based shows, non-fiction content (including reality and lifestyle shows) and international content.

Synergy Communications produced several popular shows like Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa, India's Child Genius, Mastermind India, Mum Tum Aur Hum, Kamzor Kadi Kaun, University Challenge, Jaane Kya Tune Kahi and Aao Guess Karen. In addition, Synergy has organized live shows like the Channel (V) Awards 97-98 and several quizzes. Currently, they also have Bluff Master, a unique gameshow on Star One on air. Kaun Banega Crorepati, the much-awaited popular gameshow being hosted by Shahrukh Khan, premiering on Star Plus on January 22nd will be a Synergy Adlabs production.

Recently, Adlabs Films launched BIG 92.7 FM from Hyderabad, Delhi , Chennai and Bangalore. Soon after its launch in Mumbai and Kolkata, BIG 92.7 FM will be heard across Jammu, Srinagar and several other major towns of Jammu and Kashmir and Aligarh. BIG 92.7 FM will be the first private FM station to set up base in Jammu and Srinagar.

Adlabs Films owns a chain of multiplex theatres across the country, the IMAX Adlabs theatre complex in Mumbai the best known among them. The company produces, distributes and exhibits movies, and has some well-known productions to its credit.

Adlabs’ net profit jumped 225% in Q2 September 2006 to Rs 20.46 crore, on 114.9% growth in net sales to Rs 50.09 crore.

Bharat Forge draws flak on modest quarterly growth
Bharat Forge declined 4.14% to Rs 353.30, after reporting muted growth for the latest quarter.The result was announced on 19 January 2007. On consolidated basis, Bharat Forge posted a mere 22.75% increase in net profit to Rs 76.95 crore for the quarter ended December 2006, compared to Rs 62.69 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Total income increased 8.40% to Rs 1037.09 crore for the quarter ended December 2006 from Rs 956.67 crore for the quarter ended December 2005.

On a standalone basis, auto component major Bharat Forge clocked 18.23% growth in net profit to Rs 62.97 crore for the quarter ended December 2006, against Rs 53.26 crore recorded in the year-ago period. Total income of the Pune-based company also increased 18.74% to Rs 493.31 crore in the latest quarter, compared to Rs 415.45 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.The counter clocked 58,434 shares on BSE.

Bharat Forge's domestic growth is 19.41% while exports grew 23%. Higher contribution of machine products will kick in from the next quarter. But energy and fuel related costs have impacted the company. The numbers of the company's China operations have not been included in this quarter.

Bharat Forge is bullish about its non-automotive business, and feels it will grow to 25%, and possibly beyond that in the next two-three years, from 17% last fiscal.

Bharat Forge has been on an acquisition spree over the last five years, foraying into new markets and product lines. The company made three acquisitions last year across three different markets. The full impact of recent acquisitions and the capacity ramp-up on the revenues and earnings will be felt in the financial year 2007-08.

Acquisitions have given the company considerable advantage in terms of entry into new product categories, a broad customer and manufacturing base. Bharat Forge began supplying to the European passenger car segment by acquiring CDP GmbH, Germany, in 2003. The latest acquisition of a Swedish company, Imatra Kilsta, and its subsidiary, Scottish Stampings, will widen its market in Europe.
