Sensex moves between positive and negative zone

The market opened on a weak note, dampened by weak global markets. However, it staged a sharp recovery to wipe off all losses and post marginal gains. The S&P CNX Nifty struck lifetime high above 6,200.The markets are ranged with Sensex hovering around its previous close but Nifty is trading in green.

At 12.50 hrs IST, the Sensex is down 75.43 points or 0.37% at 20389.87, and the Nifty up 20.90 points or 0.34% at 6200.30.

Cement stocks declined on selling pressure after the Tamil Nadu state government on Wednesday warned cement companies that it would take over all cement factories in the state in the public interest if cement makers did not lower prices. Grasim (down 2.13% to Rs 3670), India Cements (down 1.64% to Rs 301.95), Ambuja Cements (down 2% to Rs 145.50), and ACC (down 1.22% to Rs 1009.90) edged lower. The state government also decided to import 1 lakh tonne of cement and sell it at cost price.

India’s largest private sector power utility company in terms of net profit, Reliance Energy (REL) surged 6.40% to Rs 2517. It was the top gainer from Sensex pack. The stock hit all-time high of Rs 2528 in early trade today. As per reports, Reliance Power in which REL holds 50% stake, plans to raise as much as $3 billion in the nation's biggest initial public offering. Reliance Power, the power generating unit of REL will sell 26 crore shares at a price band of Rs 405 to Rs 450 per share.

National Thermal Power Corporation (up 4.55% to Rs 268.95), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (up 5.17% to Rs 1335), and Tata Motors (up 1.81% to Rs 808.50), were the other gainers from Sensex pack.

India’s largest private sector firm by market capitalization & oil refiner Reliance Industries advanced 1.75% to Rs 2912. The stock recovered from early low of Rs 2831.10. 3.46 lakh shares were traded on the counter on BSE

IT pivotals were subdued. TCS, the country’s top software services exporter in terms of sales, lost 2.37% to Rs 1024 and was the top loser from Sensex pack.

Wipro (down 1.58% to Rs 502.95), and Infosys Technologies (down 1.39% to Rs 1725), also edged lower

Bharti Airtel (down 2% to Rs 946.50), ITC (down 1.90% to Rs 216.95), were the other losers from Sensex pack.

Among the side counters, Nelco (up 18% to Rs 197.45), Forbes Gokak (up 18.03% to Rs 785), and Marico (up 15.46% to Rs 81.40), surged

Reliance Natural Resources was the top traded counter on BSE with turnover of Rs 241.28 crore followed by Reliance Petroleum (Rs 187.01 crore), Indiabulls Financial Services (Rs 167.65 crore), Reliance Energy (Rs 152.27 crore) and DLF (Rs 116.69 crore), in that order
