BHEL bags Rs 3800 mn thermal plant project

Outbidding Indian and multinational companies in an open tender, engineering giant Bharat Heavy Electricals secured a turnkey contract for renovation, modernisation and uprating of two thermal generating units of Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Plant (GNDTP) at Bhatinda in Punjab.

Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) placed the order worth nearly Rs 3,800 million on the company, for renovation and modernisation (R&M) of 2x110 MW Units (3&4) at GNDTP. In addition, BHEL will uprate the units from their existing capacity of 110 MW to 120 MW each, said the press release issued by the company.

This will lead to increased availability and generation, besides life extension of the units by over 15 years. The first set is targeted for commissioning by BHEL in a tight schedule of 20 months and the second unit in ten months thereafter.

Significantly, having supplied 65% of India`s total installed power generating capacity, BHEL is well positioned to obtain future R&M business. Presently, BHEL is executing contracts for R&M of two units of 120 MW each at Ukai TPS in Gujarat; one unit of 110 MW at Panipat TPS in Haryana; five units of 200 MW each at Obra TPS in UP and two units of 120 MW each at Gandhinagar TPS in Gujarat.

BHEL has also carried out overhauling, R&M and life extension of power plants in several countries like Malaysia, Bangladesh, Iraq, Libya, Malta, Cyprus, Saudi Arabia, Nepal, Bhutan, etc.

Shares of the company were last trading lower Rs 11.75 or 0.51%, at Rs 2278. Total volume of shares traded at the bourses were 43,830. ( 1.51 pm, Monday)
